- Provide specialist technical support to ensure the safe and timely preparation of aseptically prepared medicines in accordance with GMP, QA and Trust requirements.
- Undertake technical validation of aseptic worksheets, manufacturing documentation and associated records.
- Support and maintain the aseptic Quality Management System, including audits, risk assessments, deviations, CAPAs and change controls.
- Ensure compliance with MHRA requirements, medicines legislation, NHS guidance and local policies.
- Participate in validation, qualification and environmental monitoring activities.
- Provide leadership within the aseptic team and promote a culture of quality, patient safety and continuous improvement.
- Support the education, training, supervision and competency assessment of pharmacy staff working within Aseptic Services.
- Assist in the investigation of quality incidents and implementation of corrective and preventative actions.
- Monitor service performance, quality metrics and production activity, contributing to audits and inspections.
- Work collaboratively with pharmacy, quality assurance and multidisciplinary teams to deliver a safe and effective aseptic service.
- Contribute to service development, workforce planning and continuous improvement initiatives.

We operate from three main hospitals - Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as a number of community health care premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, and Ulverston Community Health Centre.
FGH and the RLI have a range of General Hospital services, with full Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units and various Consultant-led services.
WGH provides a range of General Hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre, that can help with a range of non-life threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses.
All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, day case and inpatient surgery. In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe Bay.
Education and qualifications
Essential
- Recognised Pharmacy technician qualification: Btec level3 in Pharmaceutical services (or equivalent) and/or NVQ level 3 in Pharmacy Service skills or equivalent
- Registration with General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC)
- Accredited checking qualification and registration with North West framework (equiv to NVQ level 4)
Desirable
- ACT mentor
- GCP accreditation
- Assessors Award
- Medicines reconciliation training
- IQA qualification
- CIPS qualification in procurement and supply or equivalent
Experience
Essential
- Experience in day to day management of a pharmacy service
- Experience in staff management
- Relevant experience of a hospital pharmacy including relevant specialist pharmacy setting e.g. Clinical trials, Oncology, Aseptics, Purchasing and contract management
Desirable: - Experience with clinical Audit and data analysis
Skills, ability and knowledge
Essential
- Working knowledge of pharmacy procedures, practices and legislation including Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH)
- Good influencing and teaching skills
- Computer skills including working knowledge of Microsoft word and skills for dispensing and record keeping
- Decision making and prioritising skills with good attention to detail and accuracy
- Ability to plan workload for self and others, set goals, co-ordinate projects and organise services
- Ability to talk to/communicate with patients, carers and healthcare professionals clearly
- Ability to motivate self and others and coach and lead a team
- Good manual, accuracy and analytical dispensing skills
- Good patient counselling skills
- Working knowledge of training requirements for technical/support posts
- Ability to work accurately under pressure
- Problem solving skills
Desirable: - Further computing skills e.g. presentations and spreadsheets; - Change management; - Team management
