Primary Care Paramedic or Physician Assistant

Essential

• Professional registration
• Registered Paramedic with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).
• Evidence of maintaining professional registration and continuing professional development (CPD).
• Qualifications
• BSc/degree or equivalent qualification in Paramedic Science.
• Appropriate post-registration education relevant to primary care, such as minor illness/injury, clinical assessment or prescribing, where required by the role.
• Clinical experience
• Significant experience working as a paramedic in a clinical environment.
• Experience undertaking autonomous clinical assessment, diagnosis and management of patients.
• Ability to recognise and manage acutely unwell or deteriorating patients and arrange appropriate escalation.
• Experience managing a broad range of presentations across different age groups.
• Primary care skills
• Ability to conduct comprehensive clinical assessments, including history taking and physical examination.
• Ability to formulate differential diagnoses and develop appropriate management plans.
• Understanding of primary care pathways, referral processes and multidisciplinary working.
• Ability to identify patients requiring urgent or emergency care.
• Communication and interpersonal skills
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to communicate effectively with patients, relatives and carers, including when discussing sensitive or complex issues.
• Ability to work effectively with GPs, nurses, pharmacists, allied health professionals and other members of the multidisciplinary team.

Desirable

• Primary care experience
• Previous experience working within a GP practice, Primary Care Network (PCN), Urgent Treatment Centre or other primary care setting.
• Experience managing same-day and routine primary care presentations.
• Understanding of referral pathways and community services.
• Experience working as part of a multidisciplinary primary care team.
