- Perform venepuncture for patients of all ages (within competency and practice protocols).
- Correctly identify patients and confirm requested investigations before obtaining samples.
- Label, process, and prepare specimens for transportation to the laboratory in accordance with practice and laboratory procedures.
- Maintain accurate electronic patient records using the clinical system.
- Monitor and maintain adequate stock levels of phlebotomy equipment and report shortages.
- Ensure clinical rooms are clean, safe, well-stocked, and prepared for use.
- Adhere to infection prevention and control policies, health and safety legislation, and standard operating procedures.
- Follow practice policies relating to confidentiality, information governance, safeguarding, and data protection.
- Provide reassurance and support to patients, including those who may be anxious about blood tests.
- Recognise and respond appropriately to patients who become unwell during or after venepuncture.
- Work collaboratively with the wider practice team to support efficient patient care.
- Participate in mandatory training, appraisal, and continuing professional development.

Riverside Medical Practice has a diverse patient population of circa 11,500.
We are a large town centre training practice with a long tradition of providing high quality primary care within Shrewsbury.
We are an innovative team, keen to try out new ways of working and have recently adapted how we work to make roles as clinicians more sustainable and hopefully more enjoyable. This includes the utilisation of the Total Triage model (AccuRx digital triage) through our in-house Duty Hub.
The post holder will be an integral part of the nursing team, as well as supporting the wider general practice team. We are continuously striving to develop our services and skill mix and as such are a happy team, who support each other.

Qualifications
Essential
- Educated to GCSE level or equivalent
- Recognised phlebotomy qualification.
Desirable
- Previous infection prevention and control training
Knowledge and Skills
Essential
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently while contributing effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
- Good organisational skills with excellent attention to detail.
- Competent IT skills and experience using electronic clinical record systems.
- Understanding of patient confidentiality and information governance.
- Knowledge of infection prevention and control procedures.
- Professional, compassionate, and patient-focused approach.
- Effective time management
Experience
Essential
- Proven experience undertaking venepuncture within a healthcare setting.
Desirable
- Experience working within an NHS GP practice or Primary Care setting.
- Experience using EMIS Web, SystmOne, or other NHS clinical systems.
- Knowledge of Quality and Outcomes Framework (QOF) and long-term condition monitoring.
- Experience supporting vaccination or chronic disease clinics.
- Ability to follow clinical policies and procedures
