Job description

We are seeking a professional, motivated, and compassionate Medical Receptionist to join our busy and friendly GP Surgery on a permanent basis working...

  • Provide a welcoming and professional reception service to patients and visitors.
  • Manage appointment bookings, cancellations, and enquiries via telephone, online and in person.
  • Process patient requests in accordance with practice protocols.
  • Register new patients and maintain accurate patient records using the clinical system.
  • Handle incoming and outgoing correspondence.
  • Liaise with GPs, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to ensure smooth patient flow.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality at all times in line with GDPR and NHS policies.
  • Support the practice team with general administrative duties as required.

  • Reception desk - greet patients and respond to all enquiries
  • Patient Contact - respond to patient requests via telephone, online and in person
  • Appointment management - book patient appointments in accordance with surgery protocols
  • Management of medical records
  • Preparation of consulting rooms
  • Administration of forms and documentation
  • Computer Systems - use electronic systems to support with the communication and management of patient requests and medical records
  • Confidentiality - maintain strict confidentiality at all times in line with GDPR and Surgery policies.

All responsibilities are shared across the team on a daily rota basis.

We have a registered list size of 14,000 patients who are expertly cared for by a comprehensive and diverse multi-disciplinary team including; GPs, GP Registrars, Nurse Practitioners, Practice Nurses, HCAs, Pharmacy Technicians, administrative, secretarial & reception staff.

Glastonbury is a small, friendly market town set in the beautiful countryside of Somerset. The Tor dominates the landscape alongside the ruins of the Abbey around which the town was established. Glastonbury has both a medieval and spiritual history which has attracted over the years a diverse population who live alongside many long established families in the area. This all contributes to the uniqueness of the town now famous for the annual Glastonbury Festival. Glastonbury attracts complementary practices in the town; we however provide conventional family medicine as this suits the vast majority of our practice population.

Experience

Essential

  • Previous experience in a receptionist, customer service, or administrative role.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Including telephone and written communication.
  • Ability to work calmly under pressure in a busy environment.
  • Good IT skills and experience using computerised systems.
  • Strong organisational skills and attention to detail.
  • Understanding of confidentiality and data protection principles.
  • Ability to deal tactfully and empathetically with distressed or anxious patients and carers.
  • Ability to cope with occasional exposure to frustrated/aggressive patient behaviour.

Desirable: - Experience working in a healthcare or GP surgery setting.; - Knowledge of NHS systems e.g. EMIS(Optum).; - Basic medical terminology knowledge.

Qualifications

Essential: - GCSE grade 4 or above in English & Maths

Desirable: - NVQ level 3 or equivalent in relevant studies
