Job description

Smoking Cessation - Help Me Quit for Baby Maternity Support Worker Exciting opportunity for someone to join the Maternity Team in CTMUHB in a Public H...

  • Complete training and induction programme.
  • Support the Public Health Specialist Midwife to implement the smoke free pregnancy initiative
  • Educate pregnant women about the benefits of stopping smoking in pregnancy and give support to those women wanting to quit.
  • Promote smoke free homes and advise on passive smoking and the risks involved
  • Provide smoking cessation support in line with the evidence base and the pathways
  • Deliver flexible support including face to face home visits, phone calls, texts and emails
  • Carbon Monoxide (CO) monitoring in line with local protocol and Investigate high CO readings in non-smokers
  • Determine an individual's nicotine dependency , provide advice on available stop smoking medication , how to use it, possible side effects and safe storage, working within local protocols and guidelines.
  • Work with pharmacists
  • Develop an action plan with the client according to their individual needs, organise and deliver smoking cessation support according to agreed pathways. Utilise motivational interviewing techniques records and inputting them into a database such as Quit Manager to provide accurate and comprehensive data for reporting and service improvement.
  • File records on maternity notes in a timely manner and feed back to Maternity service when appropriate.
  • Use comprehensive computer skills including Microsoft Word, Excel, e-mail and the Quit Manager smoking cessation database
  • Travel across CTM to participate in meetings and service delivery.

Communication skills

Essential: - Excellent verbal and written communication skills and ability to keep accurate records

Desirable

  • Welsh Language Speaking & Listening Skills (Level 3 and above/B2)
  • Experience of communicating on telephone with the public giving support, advice or information

Knowledge

Essential: - Understanding policy & procedures of patient confidentiality and safeguarding

Qualifications

Essential

  • GCSE level English and Mathematics or equivalent NVQ 3 or equivalent level of knowledge acquired through a combination of accredited training, short courses and experience

Desirable: - Recognised qualification in counselling or behavioural change; - Child protection level 2 - Making Every Contact Count (MECC) level 2

Experience

Essential

  • Experience of providing healthcare advice or promoting healthy lifestyle advice to patients or members of the public
  • Ability to work independently and part of a team
  • Experience of providing health support and/or counselling on a one-to-one basis or group

Desirable

  • Experience of developing and delivering successful health promotion interventions
  • Experiencing of handling a caseload and examples of ability to manage your workload
  • A record of working in Maternity services, with pregnant women or other social settings where public health support has been provided

Other

Essential

  • The post holder must demonstrate a positive commitment to uphold diversity and equality policies approved by the Trust.
  • Able to travel throughout the geographical area covered by Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board in a timely manner
  • Able to deal with moderate physical activity e.g., transportation of equipment or resources.
  • Good IT skills including Outlook, Microsoft packages and spreadsheets
