We are advertising for a Substantive Consultant Cardiologist (10 PAs). This is a new post which will be working mainly at the Freeman Hospital Cardiothoracic Unit. The post-holder will have broad general cardiology skills with a special interest in percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). They will be allowed to develop other special interests of their choice according to the service needs of the department. There will be opportunities to develop and contribute to continuing education, professional development, audit and research within the Division and the Trust. There is the expectation of collaborative working with colleagues, allied specialities and liaison with other disciplines throughout the trust and network.

Education, Qualifications and Specialist Skills

Essential

  • Primary Medical Qualification
  • Full GMC Registration with a licence to practise
  • Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register (within 6 months from the date of the AAC)
  • Holder of membership of the Royal College of Physicians or equivalent

Desirable: - Higher research degree (MD or PhD); - Special skills training in the specialty

Clinical Skills and Knowledge

Essential

  • Evidence of experience and competency in PCI
  • Evidence of a substantial commitment to the specialty
  • Ability to offer an expert clinical opinion within the speciality
  • Ability to take independent responsibility for the clinical care of patients referred to a tertiary centre

Desirable: - Evidence of a special interest in complex PCI

Management and Administration Experience

Essential

  • Ability to run a service and participate in management process
  • Committed to share in professional, managerial and teaching responsibilities necessary to fulfil the obligations of the Directorate to the Trust and its workforce
  • Evidence of involvement in authoring or reviewing clinical guidelines

Desirable

  • Proven management and administration ability
  • Understanding of management goals
  • Evidence of leadership / project management
  • Evidence of having implemented change
  • Experience in developing and implementing new technologies

Teaching

Essential

  • Experience of supervising junior medical staff
  • Experience of participation in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching
  • Ability to teach clinical, technical and practical skills

Desirable: - Attendance at courses to develop teaching skills; - Postgraduate qualification in medical education

Clinical Governance, Audit and Research

Essential: - Experience of audit projects and Clinical Governance; - Understanding of research principles

Desirable: - Higher research degree (MSc, MD or PhD); - Publications in interventional research in the last five years

Communication, Relationships and Working with Colleagues:

Essential

  • Ability to communicate and liaise effectively with patients and other people within a team
  • Ability to work as a team with professional colleagues in all disciplines
