It is expected that the consultant appointed to this post will have a major role in the clinical leadership and delivery of quality patient care for the acute trust in Lincolnshire. This post is primarily supporting the acute trust with direct clinical care reviews, clinical leadership, quality improvement, education and multidisciplinary team support. SBH community services are delivered geographically, and this post also supports the Lincoln and surrounding areas community hospice team. Supervision and support will come from the Medical Director at St Barnabas Hospice (SBH).
A focus on "front door" or proactive palliative care in the acute trust using a quality improvement approach would support both the system and organisational objectives.
SBH delivers specialist palliative care services across Lincolnshire, supporting both the acute sector and the community services. Within those areas, other organisations including independent and charitable providers as well as specialist services established in the community and hospitals contribute to delivering care. The successful applicant will be able to support cross organisational SPC working.
The job will include liaising with and teaching nursing staff, health care assistants, therapists and other members of the multidisciplinary team. It will also include teaching medical students rotating through the ward, teaching and appraising FY and ST trainees and SpRs on rotation at the Hospital.
- Engage locally and regionally in the strategic and operational delivery of excellent palliative and end of life care in Lincolnshire
- Engage in key strategic relationships and partnerships that support service developments and ensuring organisational aims are met
- To consider new partnerships with clinical teams to benefit patient care
- Support the delivery of key elements of the St Barnabas clinical strategy
- Support the delivery of key elements of ULTH strategy
- As a consultant member of the medical team, manage a clinical caseload and contribute to the delivery of palliative and end of life care across a range of settings
- Show leadership and support to ensure the quality of care provided is measured and consistently high
- Participate in ULTHs appraisal and revalidation process ensuring all appropriate CPD, quality improvement, patient and colleague feedback is evidenced as per the national requirements.
- Take a leadership approach to the delivery of SPC education in the acute trust and wider across the system
- Contribute to quality improvement and research
- Provide guidance on ethical issues related to patient care
- Contribute to the development of innovative approaches to the delivery of specialist palliative care across all care boundaries

Qualifications
Essential
- On GMC Specialist Register for Palliative Medicine or within 6 months of CCT or Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR)
- Possession of appropriate higher postgraduate qualifications (e.g. MRCP, MRCGP)
Desirable
- Other higher professional qualifications (e.g. Masters, Doctorate)
Experience, Ability and Research
Essential
- Experience in all aspects of palliative medicine in a wide range of settings.
- Experience in leading a multi-professional team.
- Evidence of contribution to effective clinical audit and quality improvement activity and clinical risk management
Desirable
- Ability to take full and independent responsibility for palliative management
- Experience of involvement in research
Management/Teaching
Essential
- Ability to plan strategically and to exercise sound judgment when faced with conflicting pressures
- Ability to motivate and develop the multi-disciplinary team, balancing departmental and personal objectives
- Experience in teaching health professionals including medical personnel at undergraduate and postgraduate level.
Desirable
- Evidence of leadership in the development of clinical services
- Evidence of developing a high-quality, high-performance service
Personal Attributes
Essential
- Demonstrate the ability to work well within a multi-professional team.
- Membership of a medical defence organisation.
- Private residence within thirty minutes travelling time of St Barnabas Hospice IPU.
