The trainee Plaster technician will be assisting the qualified staff with the following:

  • Applying, removing, and repairing plaster casts and synthetic casts.
  • Measuring and fitting braces, splints, and orthopaedic supports.
  • Assessing cast fit and identifying complications such as pressure areas, swelling, or neurovascular compromise, escalating concerns appropriately.
  • Providing patients with education on cast care, mobility, and when to seek urgent medical advice.
  • Maintaining plaster room equipment and ensuring adequate stock levels.
  • Supporting fracture clinics and other outpatient services to ensure timely patient flow.
  • Working in line with infection prevention, health and safety, and clinical governance standards.
  • Contributing to service improvement, audit, and ongoing professional development.

The Plaster Technician Team plays a vital role in ensuring patients receive high-quality immobilisation and rehabilitation support, helping to optimise recovery while enhancing the efficiency of Orthopaedic and Outpatient services.

Education / Qualifications

Essential

  • GCSEs (or equivalent), including English and Mathematics.

Desirable

  • Health/care-related qualification

Knowledge

Essential

  • Understanding of patient care principles
  • Understanding of infection prevention and patient safety principles

Desirable

  • Basic knowledge of musculoskeletal system

Skills

Essential

  • Good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to follow protocols and supervision
  • Team working and organisational skills
  • Basic IT skills

Desirable

  • Experience with clinical documentation systems (EPR).
  • Previous plaster/cast exposure.

Experience

Essential

  • Experience of working on own and within a team.
  • Experience in a healthcare or patient-facing role within an outpatient setting

  • Orthopaedic or outpatient experience
