As a Staff Nurse within the Pre Assessment Service, you will be responsible for delivering comprehensive pre-operative assessments to patients preparing for surgery and treatment. You will undertake clinical evaluations, identify and manage potential risks, and ensure patients are medically optimised prior to admission.
Key responsibilities include conducting face-to-face and telephone pre-assessments, performing clinical procedures such as phlebotomy, ECGs and patient observations, and reviewing patient histories to support safe and effective care planning. You will work closely with consultants, surgeons, anaesthetists and multidisciplinary teams to coordinate patient pathways, escalate clinical concerns and ensure all required investigations are completed in a timely manner.
You will provide patients with clear information and reassurance throughout their pre-operative journey, promoting a positive patient experience. In addition, you will contribute to service development, audit activities and quality improvement initiatives, while maintaining accurate clinical documentation and adhering to professional, organisational and regulatory standards at all times.
As a Staff Nurse within the Pre Assessment Service, you will play a key role in ensuring patients are clinically prepared and optimised for surgery and treatment. Working as part of a multidisciplinary team, you will deliver high-quality, patient-centred care through comprehensive pre-operative assessments, identifying and managing clinical risks while supporting patients throughout their healthcare journey.
You will be responsible for assessing patients prior to admission, providing advice and reassurance, coordinating investigations and collaborating with consultants, surgeons, anaesthetists and other healthcare professionals to facilitate safe and effective patient pathways.
Key Responsibilities- Conduct comprehensive pre-assessment consultations for patients undergoing surgical procedures and treatment.
- Complete clinical evaluations, risk assessments and associated documentation in line with organisational policies and professional standards.
- Undertake clinical procedures including phlebotomy, ECG recording, patient observations and other relevant assessments.
- Review medical histories, medications and diagnostic results to identify potential risks and escalate concerns appropriately.
- Carry out telephone triage assessments and determine when face-to-face review or further investigation is required.
- Liaise effectively with consultants, surgeons, anaesthetists and the wider multidisciplinary team to ensure patients are optimally prepared for admission.
- Coordinate and facilitate pre-operative investigations and referrals as required.
- Provide patients and their families with information, education and support to ensure they understand the planned treatment pathway.
- Maintain accurate, timely and confidential patient records in accordance with professional, legal and organisational requirements.
- Recognise, escalate and respond appropriately to changes in patient condition or identified clinical concerns.
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives, service development projects, audits and patient experience activities.
- Contribute to maintaining a safe clinical environment and support compliance with infection prevention, health and safety and governance requirements.
- Act as a professional role model, demonstrating excellent communication and patient advocacy at all times.
- Work collaboratively with colleagues to promote continuity of care and deliver exceptional patient outcomes.
Professional Responsibilities- Maintain active NMC registration and practise in accordance with the NMC Code.
- Demonstrate accountability for clinical practice and participate in ongoing professional development.
- Ensure care is delivered in line with evidence-based practice, organisational policies and relevant clinical guidelines.
- Participate in mandatory training, competency assessments and appraisal processes.

Qualifications
Essential
- Registered Nurse with current NMC registration.
- Previous experience working within a surgical nursing environment.
- Competency in phlebotomy and ECG recording.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage competing priorities.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Commitment to delivering high-quality, patient-centred care.
Desirable
- Previous experience within a Pre Assessment or Pre-Operative Assessment setting.
- Experience undertaking telephone triage assessments.
- Knowledge of perioperative patient pathways.
- Experience participating in audit, quality improvement or service development initiatives.
