Job description

The Specialist Pharmacist Cancer & Technical Services plays a key role in the safe delivery of Systemic Anti-Cancer Therapy SACT, supports the managem...

Ensure safe and compliant manufacturing and dispensing of prescriptions in the aseptic unit.

Provide clinical input and policy development for chemotherapy and oncological care.

Participate in clinical trials and multidisciplinary meetings.

Maintain standards and implement NICE recommendations.

Deliver pharmaceutical care and medicines optimisation across wards.

Review prescriptions for appropriateness and legality.

Train and mentor pharmacy students and junior pharmacists.

Monitor non formulary drug use and support clinical governance initiatives.

Promote cost effective drug use and participate in audits.

Provide financial and risk data related to medicines.

Liaise with internal and external stakeholders.

Promote safe prescribing and mentor junior staff.

Manage own workload and contribute to audits and training.

Deliver education and support strategic planning.

Provide specialist advice and ensure safe prescribing.

Participate in ward rounds and medicines management initiatives.

Develop and implement treatment guidelines and SOPs.

Support clinical governance and legal compliance.

Supervise and train junior staff.

Provide feedback and support staff development.

Participate in weekend, bank holiday, and on call rotas.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Masters degree in Pharmacy (MPharm) or equivalent
  • Member of the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC)
  • Completion of or expectation to complete a post-graduate Clinical Pharmacy Diploma

Desirable: - Product Approval Accreditation

Experience

Essential

  • A minimum of 2 years experience post registration
  • Broad clinical pharmacy experience and knowledge of therapeutics
  • Experience working in Aseptic Services
  • Commitment and evidence of professional updating and formal continuous professional development

Desirable: - Relevant hospital experience; - Evidence of involvement in pharmacy practice research and/or audit

  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Methodical with effective organisational skills in the workplace. Able to prioritise workload and meet deadlines
  • Ability to supervise the work of junior staff and provide constructive feedback on performance
  • Able to demonstrate initiative
  • Able to interpret and summarise a wide range of clinical information and demonstrate appropriate clinical knowledge and application
  • Good knowledge and understanding of the formulation, preparation and therapeutic action of medicines
  • Good analytical and evaluative skills
  • Able to present written information clearly, concisely and accurately
  • Able to contribute to the strategic planning and development of the clinical pharmacy services
  • Good knowledge of critical appraisal skills, evidence based medicines and formulary systems
  • Broad understanding of current hospital pharmacy practice
  • Computer literate including ability to use Microsoft Word, email and internet
  • Ability to work unsupervised
  • Ability to deal with the public, clinicians, members of the healthcare team and pharmacy colleagues
  • Ability to work as part of a team
  • Flexibility with regard to change in work schedules
  • Professional appearance
  • Honest and trustworthy and able to maintain strict confidentiality at all times
  • Self-motivated with enthusiasm to work as a specialist clinical pharmacist and to contribute to the forward planning of the service

Desirable: - Ability to deputise for senior pharmacists; - Ability to influence senior medical, nursing and pharmacy staff
