Job description

We are an award-winning, kind and responsible council, and we're incredibly proud of our district and communities that reach from our coastlines to surrounding hills and mountains. Our district includes the historic city of Lancaster, Morecambe, Carnforth and our beautiful rural locations and villages.

Join us as a Senior Environmental Health Officer and become a lead officer in the Environmental Protection team, safeguarding public health and enhancing environmental quality across Lancaster district. Your expertise will help ensure compliance with relevant legislation, codes of practice and guidance, while contributing to safer, healthier communities.

We welcome applications from experienced Environmental Health professionals from a wider area. Whilst the role requires a visible leadership presence to support and develop the team, we are open to discussing hybrid working arrangements for candidates who can travel to Lancaster on a regular basis, typically one or two days per week.

You will conduct and oversee inspections, investigations, and regulatory enforcement related to air quality, pollution control, private water supplies and environmental enforcement. Leading projects and managing team workloads, you'll prepare technical reports, liaise with partners, and provide robust expert advice on complex cases. You'll play an important role in leading a team both in person and remotely, driving continuous improvement and delivering high standards of public service.

If you hold a degree or diploma in Environmental Health and are registered with the CIEH or equivalent. With extensive experience in local authority environmental health regulation, you'll be confident managing complex casework and leading a team. You'll have the ability to build strong working relationships whether colleagues are office-based or working remotely, communicate clearly, make robust evidence-based decisions, and embody our values of Working Together, Ambition, Pride, and Ownership. Flexibility to work outside normal hours when needed is essential.

If you're passionate about making a real impact in our communities and leading a dedicated team, we'd love to hear from you. Whether you're local to the area or looking for a new opportunity with flexible hybrid working, we'd encourage you to apply.
