Senior clinical registrars will be expected to participate in ward rounds, clinics and operating theatres. The postholder accepts that s/he will also perform duties on the emergency take and unforeseen circumstances at the request of the appropriate consultant, in consultation where practicable with senior colleagues.

The General Surgery department is part of a busy Trauma Hospital and performs around 190 emergency laparotomies, 150 elective colorectal resections, over 100 bariatric operations and over 500 laparoscopic cholecystectomies per year and has a busy and active elective breast surgical practice.

Qualifications and Registration
Essential
- Maintain Full registration with the GMC.
Desirable
- Higher academic qualification (e.g., MD or MSc).
Training and Experience
Essential
- Recent experience and familiarity of UK hospital systems and practices (or equivalent).
- Completion of Foundations years 1 & 2 (or equivalent)
Desirable
- Training in laparoscopic surgery
Further Training, Management, Audit
Essential
- Evidence of recent CME/ reasonable training progression at this stage of career.
Desirable
- Experience in audit project and written up
- Knowledge of contemporary NHS management issues.
Research, Teaching, Publications
Essential
- Interest in research
- Willingness to undertake teaching of medical under graduates and postgraduates
Desirable
- Proven track record in research.
- Evidence of relevant publications in peer reviewed journals.
- Demonstration of involvement in clinical directorate management.
- Ability to gain trust and confidence of colleagues and patients
- Ability to teach effectively
Personal Requirements

- Good written communication skills. Evidence of the ability to communicate with patients, colleagues, and staff at all levels.
