As a qualified General Practitioner (GP) your role is to provide acute primary care to patients who walk-in or are referred via NHS 111. This includes dealing with patients presenting with minor illness, more serious illness (needing an assessment and onward referral / transfer to secondary care) and minor injuries (training / support available).
You will also support the developing Nurse Practitioners (NPs), Clinical Practitioners (CPs) and GP Registrars in their assessment and management of primary care illness whilst on shift (part of an ongoing workforce development program).
There is also the opportunity to join the NSECH Front Door Service which provides Nurse Practitioner led streaming and rapid assessment of walk-in patients to NSECH ('pre-ED') and direction to the most appropriate service for their immediate health needs. Destination options include the Assessment and Navigation Service (ANS), Emergency Department, Same Day Emergency Care (Acute Medicine / Surgery / Gynaecology), off-site UTC or self-care. Shadowing sessions, training sessions and live assessment prior to commitment are provided as this role is not suited to everyone. Training and support are given.
- The post holder is required to work within the limits of their competency in acute primary care (and minor injury when trained) seeing patients of all ages. They will be an integral part of a team which also includes NPs, CPs, GPRs and Health Care Assistants (HCAs). Excellent communication skills with patients and colleagues are essential along with openness and a firm duty of candour.
- Within the UTCs GPs work from an appointed ledger: patients are booked into 15-minute slots. GPs currently have 3 booked patients per hour and 1 x 15minute slot to support the wider UTC team as needed clinically whilst on shift. The postholder may need to be flexible in terms of location of work, depending on staffing and service demand.
- Clinical documentation is on SystmOne.
- Diagnosis is primarily based on history and examination (with baseline observations including random capillary glucose / ketones and ECGs). Plain X-ray imaging is available to those who are qualified to order and interpret them (training can be provided and on-call reporting radiographers / radiologists are available).

Qualifications
Essential
- Full GMC Registration
- Vocational Training Certificate or equivalent (JCPTGP/nMRCGP)
- Membership of a recognized defence union (MPS/MDU)
- Currently on a performers list and never been removed from a performers list for a detrimental reason

Experience & Knowledge
Essential
- Clinical training and experience as a General Practitioner
- Evidence of recent self-directed learning or development
- Experience in a wide variety of clinical settings
- Experience of use of primary care IT systems
- Experience of, and commitment to teaching undergraduate and postgraduate staff from other professions
- Experience of and commitment to clinical audit. A good understanding of Clinical Governance and quality issues as well as current health and social policy
- Experience of GP clinical IT systems
- Demonstrable evidence of lifelong learning Reflective approach to personal development with an ability to acknowledge and effectively manage poor performance.
Desirable
