Essential

Registered Nurse (Adult, Child or Learning Disability) with active NMC registration

Significant post-registration clinical experience

Extensive experience in clinical teaching, assessment and education

Experience of developing, delivering and evaluating training programmes

Leadership and people management experience

Role Summary

The post holder will support the continuing development of high-quality palliative and end

of life care and the delivery of evidence-based practice to care and family services staff,

including volunteers were appropriate, across community and in-patient services. The role

will support the implementation of our strategy, creating a fit for purpose nursing and care

workforce.

The post holder will lead the practice education team in developing, designing, and

delivering an education and training programme across all care and family services including

planned care, specialist palliative care, wellbeing and therapies, and governance teams. The

post holder will advise the wider organisation on mandatory training required and will

oversee organisational compliance.

The post holder will contribute to the building of a learning culture throughout the

organisation and work closely with all departments within care and family services,

governance & quality team, and the wider organisation, to ensure the provision of an

excellent and equitable education service.

The post holder will support network wide educational programs and engage with relevant

regional palliative care educational programs. They will represent Claire House at external

training events and participate in learning and development groups with other hospices or

agencies as appropriate.

The post holder will commit to Claire House values and embed them into all aspects of

education and leadership.

Position of the role at Claire House

The post holder reports to the Head of Hospice Care, Quality & Governance and is

accountable to the Director of Clinical Services

The post holder will work collaboratively with the senior members of the clinical

team across care and family services, addressing all aspects of training and

development

The post holder will line manage members of the Practice Education Team

Key Duties & Responsibilities

Scope of job

To monitor and measure success against agreed performance indicators

Implement key workforce development and quality initiatives in order to achieve

excellence in patient care

To share learning and development both internally and externally with our partners

including presentations at events and conferences

To support the Practice Education Team in leading and delivering all aspects of

teaching and learning

To support medical, nursing, and therapeutic colleagues to challenge practice and

identify competency issues

To develop an annual internal and external education program

To develop a multimodal educational portfolio to meet the needs of clinical care

teams working across settings and in the community

To engage with the local and regional palliative care networks, supporting

educational opportunities and collaboration to optimise educational opportunities

To lead on student nursing and nurse associate placements

To champion both external and internal educational development pathways for the

workforce

Be a visible, accessible and positive point of contact for staff, demonstrating expert

skill in communication at all times

To participate in the development, monitoring and audit of policies and SOPs

relating to clinical practice and care, and ensure these are adhered to across all

areas of work

Lead and participate in audit

Promote the safety of patients, staff, visitors and volunteers at all times through

education and training

To maintain an up to date knowledge and awareness of safeguarding children and

adults, ensuring effective communication across multidisciplinary agencies and

adherence to agreed safeguarding policies and procedures

Leadership & Managerial

Develop strong internal and external partnerships to meet the requirements of the

organisation

To lead and motivate staff to ensure a high standard of professionalism, efficiency

and effectiveness, fostering a culture of continuous quality improvement

To review and make any necessary changes to care competencies

To be responsible for the ongoing development and sustainability of high quality and

innovative practice and educational development within the organisation

To establish and maintain an effective communication network across the

organisation

To work closely with relevant leads, in the identification of services learning and

educational needs, that reflect workforce and strategic priorities

Create an inter-professional approach to education, empowering others to support

the delivery of education and training

To develop the annual education curriculum for both internal and external

audiences

Submit statistical information and complete reports as necessary

Ensure accurate records are in place

Evaluate own teaching input and actively participate in quality assurance

To line manage the Practice Education Team, ensuring the broader education team

are kept abreast of, and involved in, training developments

To be responsible for staff development and training budgets

To support in the financial forecasting of current and future training & development

programmes

Lead on developing income generation from the Practice Education team, building

external partnerships for sustainability and future growth

To sign off and approve study day and conference requests keeping within the

educational budget, and producing an annual report of all external study attended

To maintain external links with national bodies and palliative care networks and

community to ensure our practice is in line with national guidance

Clinical Skills & Learning Development

Identify learning needs and implement appropriate initiatives

Identify emerging clinical needs and develop appropriate education plans in line

with clinical governance

Support the senior team by responding to complaints and incidents, and facilitate

the development of education plans that reinforce a learning culture

Demonstrate a high level of evidence-based knowledge and act as a clinical role

model by participating in clinical activity across the service

Provide expert knowledge to support staff in maintaining a safe clinical

environment, whilst also developing the competence and confidence of the staff

Evaluate learning and clinical activities to identify and inform future practice

Implement and regularly review competency frameworks in order to assess the

ongoing development of clinical and professional skills

Contribute to the development of standards and performance

To be confident in presenting and leading teaching and training in a variety of

settings and to a variety of audiences both clinical and non-clinical

Research

Engage with educational research and scholarly activity to inform practice and

enhance learning outcomes

Remain up to date and ensure that clinical practice and teaching are evidence

based, facilitating the dissemination and implementation of research findings

Promote palliative care research and support the development of a research-active

culture across the organisation

Facilitate staff engagement in research, quality improvement, journal clubs, service

evaluation, and evidence-based practice initiatives

Support the dissemination of innovation, research, and service evaluation through

presentations, publications, and professional networks

Students

Responsible for overseeing and managing student placements

To support the placement of students across all care and family services teams

To act as a single point of contact for our partner universities in mapping student

placements

Undertake an annual education audit in partnership with the Quality & Governance

Lead

Have oversight of other student placements opportunities across care & family

services and ensure all pre-placement checks have been undertaken appropriately

and thoroughly, with central log held of all placements

Dimensions and limits of authority

To work autonomously ensuring personal accountability in accordance with the

Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC) code of conduct. This includes remaining

clinically proficient by actively working in the clinical environment on a regular basis

When delivering one to one training will work as supplementary to the staffing

requirements in order to effectively train and support staff in developing their

clinical skills

To be the senior point of contact to the 4 local universities who have a learning

agreement with the hospice and lead on completing the educational audit with the

academic partner/s

Qualifications and skills level

Actively registered as a nurse with NMC as either Child, Adult, or Learning Disability

Extensive professional post registration experience

ENB 998 or equivalent (degree level)

Qualification in training (post reg qualification) or willing to undertake

Extensive experience of developing and delivering training

Proficient in core and extended clinical competencies

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills

Experience/ qualification in leadership and management
