Your main responsibility will be to provide
a safe, reliable and friendly phlebotomy service for our patients.
Take blood samples from adults
in line with practice procedures and your training
Confirm the patients identity
and obtain consent before each procedure
Label, record, store and
prepare samples correctly for collection
Keep the clinical room clean,
safe and ready for the next patient
Maintain stock and report when
supplies need ordering
Recognise when a patient is
unwell and seek clinical help promptly
Record activity accurately in
the patients clinical record
Follow infection prevention,
sharps and clinical waste procedures
Treat patients with kindness,
dignity and respect
Work with colleagues to keep
clinics running safely and on time
The post-holder will provide phlebotomy
clinics under the direction of the clinical team and in line with practice
procedures.
Clinical responsibilities
Undertake venepuncture within
their training and competence
Check requests and patient
details before taking samples
Use the correct sample bottles
and labelling procedures
Prepare samples and paperwork
for laboratory collection
Dispose of sharps and clinical
waste safely
Follow infection prevention and
control procedures
Respond appropriately to
fainting, bleeding or other concerns and seek clinical support
Maintain accurate and timely
patient records
Report incidents, errors or
concerns promptly
Other responsibilities
Maintain patient
confidentiality at all times
Follow practice policies,
including safeguarding, data protection and health and safety
Keep mandatory training up to
date
Monitor stock and help keep the
clinical area organised
Attend relevant practice
meetings and training
Work respectfully with patients
and colleagues
The Cornerstone Practice is based in the
centre of March and cares for approximately 9,500 patients. We use SystmOne.
Our team includes GP partners, salaried
GPs, advanced practitioners, treatment room nurses, healthcare assistants, a
mental health practitioner and an experienced reception and administration
team. We also work with pharmacy, physiotherapy and social prescribing
colleagues.
We are a busy practice, but people help one
another. We want someone who will take pride in giving patients a calm and
dependable service and who will be comfortable asking for help when needed.
Experience
Essential
- Phlebotomy training or a recognised venepuncture qualification
- Competent and experienced in taking blood samples from adults
- Understands patient identification, consent and safe sample labelling
- Understands infection prevention, sharps safety and confidentiality
- Calm and reassuring manner with patients
- Clear spoken and written communication
- Able to work accurately and follow procedures
- Reliable and able to manage a planned clinic
- Able to work 4 hours each day, Monday to Friday
Desirable
- Previous experience in general practice or another NHS setting
- Experience of using SystmOne
- Current basic life support and infection prevention training
