Phlebotomist

• Carry out venepuncture safely and effectively.

• Record relevant information accurately within the patient's clinical record.

• Support patients who may be anxious, nervous or have difficulty with blood collection.
• Recognise and respond appropriately to patients who become unwell during or following venepuncture.
• Maintain high standards of infection prevention and control.
• Ensure clinical areas and equipment are clean, safe and appropriately stocked.
• Dispose of clinical waste and sharps safely in accordance with policy.
• Report incidents, concerns, equipment issues or unsuccessful procedures appropriately.
• Maintain patient confidentiality and comply with information governance requirements.
• Work collaboratively with GPs, nurses, healthcare assistants, administrative staff and other members of the multidisciplinary team.
• Participate in relevant training and maintain competence in phlebotomy and associated procedures.
• Undertake other duties appropriate to the role and level of responsibility as required by the Practice Manager or clinical team.

• Recognised phlebotomy training or qualification.
• Evidence of ongoing learning and maintaining clinical competence.
• Experience
• Previous experience undertaking venepuncture.
• Experience working within a healthcare or clinical environment.
• Experience handling and processing blood samples.

• Competent and confident in performing venepuncture.
• Understanding of infection prevention and control.
• Knowledge of safe sample collection, labelling, handling and transportation.
• Understanding of patient confidentiality, safeguarding and data protection.

Desirable

• Previous experience working within general practice, primary care or an NHS setting.
• Experience taking blood from a wide range of patients, including children, older adults and patients with difficult venous access.
• Experience supporting anxious or needle-phobic patients.
• Familiarity with Systmone clinical systems and electronic patient records.
• Knowledge of local pathology and specimen-handling procedures.
• Previous safeguarding and infection prevention and control training.
• Relevant additional healthcare qualification or experience.
• Experience working as part of a multidisciplinary team.
• Understanding of NHS policies, procedures and standards.
