Operating Department Practitioner

To aid in the delivery of direct and indirect patient care throughout

the operating department. Working within

defined policies and procedures, implementing and evaluating pathways of care

for the patient within the perioperative setting. Under the direction of the senior staff,

liaise with medical, nursing, ancillary staff and other departments to ensure

the timely delivery of patient care.

Job Title: Operating Department/ Theatre Practitioner

Department: Theatre

Responsible to: Anaesthetic Lead

Accountable

to: Theatre Sister

To aid in the delivery of direct and indirect patient care throughout

the operating department. Working within

defined policies and procedures, implementing and evaluating pathways of care

for the patient within the perioperative setting. Under the direction of the senior staff,

liaise with medical, nursing, ancillary staff and other departments to ensure

the timely delivery of patient care.

Line Manager is the Anaesthetic Lead

Work in close liaison with the Theatre Staff and

Consultants

Liaison with staffing agencies, other hospital

departments, wards.

Be prepared to

work across the theatre specialities including anaesthetics, scrub and

recovery, if required to do so, to meet the needs of the service. (Skill

dependent)

To participate as

members of a multidisciplinary team in the assessment, planning, implementation

and evaluation of individualised patient care. Demonstrating the ability to

competently formulate and deliver care without direct supervision.

To provide skilled anaesthetic assistance to the

Consultant Anaesthetist. Including checking of equipment, in line with local

and national policies, including emergency kit.

To act as scrub practitioner, being responsible for preparing the theatre for surgery

and preparing surgical equipment and supplies. Maintaining a sterile field and

anticipating the surgeon's needs. Ensuring specimens are correctly labelled and

dispatched.

To act as circulating member of the theatre team when

required. Participate as a member of the theatre team and to carry out safety

checks on swabs, instruments, blades, needles etc.

Providing post

anaesthetic care, in PACU, following local and national policies.

Transferring and handing over patients to

other departments, using appropriate communication methods.

They will ensure that standards are met as per national

and local guidelines, including National Frameworks.

Is wholly accountable for their practice, in line with

the NMC code/HCPC standards, and takes every reasonable opportunity to sustain

and improve their knowledge and professional standards.

To ensure all written documentation is in accordance with

Hospital and NMC code/HCPC standards.

guidelines and maintaining patient safety throughout the peri-operative environment.

To report promptly any accidents, incidents, complaints

or unplanned occurrences to the Theatre leads and be competent in using the

Datix system of incident reporting.

To participate in staff Personal Development Discussions

and the identification of personal needs and set and evaluate personal

objectives

To participate in in-house

training sessions and attend meetings and discussions when required

Financial

To report any

reductions in stock levels, breakages and faulty equipment and to maintain

stock.

To undertake all mandatory and essential training in

Infection Prevention and Control.

To familiarise themselves with and adhere to current

Infection Prevention and Control policies relevant to them and their area of

work.

To communicate any identified infection risks to the

Infection Prevention and Control leads and where appropriate report any

Healthcare Associated Infections in line with SPHs Incident Reporting Policy

Essential: - Registered Operating Department Practitioner or Registered Nurse.; - HCPC/NMC Registered
