The Mechanical Craftsperson diagnoses and repairs mechanical and plumbing faults, performs maintenance tasks, and supports the operation of HVAC, water safety, and medical gas systems. The role includes using control systems, developing risk assessments, and providing technical support to contractors.

Reporting to the Mechanical Supervisor/Technician, the Mechanical Craftsperson is responsible for maintaining mechanical systems, including HVAC, water safety, and medical gas services.

Key duties include performing fault diagnosis, planned and reactive maintenance, ensuring compliance with health and safety standards, and supporting capital projects. The role also involves maintaining accurate records and providing technical support to staff and contractors.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Recognised Mechanical Engineering apprenticeship and relevant Level 3 qualification (NVQ/City & Guilds or equivalent)
  • Experience maintaining, fault-finding and repairing mechanical building services and plant equipment
  • Knowledge of steam systems, PSSR requirements, water systems and safe systems of work
  • Demonstrates effective communication, teamwork, professionalism and commitment to Trust Values and CPD

Desirable

  • Previous NHS, healthcare or critical infrastructure engineering experience
  • Experience working on steam boilers, pressure vessels, calorifiers or water safety systems
  • Experience using CAFM systems, BMS systems and electronic maintenance records
  • Additional specialist training (HTM Competent Person, Legionella, Health & Safety, supervisory training)

Knowledge

Essential

  • Application Evidence - Demonstrates ability to respond effectively to engineering emergencies, service failures and major incidents whilst remaining calm under pressure
  • Application Evidence Demonstrates strong commitment to Health & Safety, risk assessment and safe systems of work in high-risk environments
  • Demonstrates initiative, adaptability and resilience when managing competing priorities and working under pressure

Desirable

  • Specialist competencies such as Confined Spaces, Legionella Control, PSSR, Steam Systems, HTM Competent Person Ventilation or similar technical accreditation

Experience

Essential

  • Experience of working in a commercial or industrial mechanical/ mechanical engineering maintenance environment
  • Experience of working in multidisciplinary teams

Desirable

  • Working with IT based systems
