The upper gastrointestinal surgery is part of the GI surgery unit based in the Brunel Building, Southmead Hospital, and comprises of 7 upper GI surgeons. This includes 4 specialist Bariatric surgeons undertaking the full range of surgery, including revisional surgery. The GI team is part of the rota providing 24-hour emergency GI surgical care at Southmead Hospital. The postholder will manage major trauma cases when doing emergency general surgery on-call.
When on call, the on-call consultant is responsible for reviewing patients in same day emergency care (SDEC) and acute admissions from 1pm. Consultants do an evening ward round (4-5pm) on the day they are on call and a post take ward round at 08:00 the following day. On the day after on call, the consultant is responsible for the CEPOD list. The post holder will have no elective commitments when on-call. The emergency take has evolved over time in both volume and complexity. GI surgery provides a subspecialist upper and lower GI take with patient transfer between teams. We have a co-located medical and surgical SDEC unit. The surgical SDEC unit includes other surgical specialties such as urology and neurosurgery.
Each consultant will do regular week-day on-call with average 1 in 8 frequency and weekend on-call of 1 in 12. These frequencies are subject to changes with new appointments. On-call day to include SDEC and the CEPOD list on the following day. This model will be reviewed at 6-12 months.

Qualifications & Training
Essential: - Full and specialist registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) Or Within 12 months of obtaining expected CCT date at time of interview.; - Full Cesr

Experience
Essential
- Evidence of thorough and broad training and experience in Upper gastro surgery and general surgery on call.
- Able to take responsibility for delivering service without direct supervision

Clinical Knowledge and Skills
