Throughout the night, you will remain awake, alert and responsive, monitoring the child in accordance with their individual care plan and agreed night-time routines. Following full training and competency assessment, you will support the safe use of the childs BiPAP equipment, including ensuring that their mask remains appropriately in place and responding as required.

You will recognise changes in the childs presentation and promptly escalate any health, safety or safeguarding concerns.

You will maintain accurate and timely records of observations and the support provided during each shift and communicate effectively with the family, care team and relevant professionals.

During your induction and competency period, you will also undertake daytime shifts to get to know the child and family, understand their routines and communication needs, and complete required competencies before progressing to independent waking-night support.

Hours: Waking Night Care Worker20 hours per week (10:30 pm 6:30 am), working 2 nights one week and 3 nights the following week on a rolling rota.

Hourly Rate: £12.82

Role PurposeAs a Childrens Play and Health Care Worker Waking Nights, you will be part of Lagans Foundations specialist care team, providing high-quality, compassionate and attentive support to a child with complex health needs within their own home.

Your primary responsibility will be to provide safe and dependable support throughout the night. You will remain awake, alert and responsive for the full duration of each shift, monitoring the child in accordance with their individual care plan, risk assessments and agreed night-time routines.

A key part of this package involves supporting the child with the safe use of their BiPAP equipment. You do not need to have previous BiPAP or ventilation experience. Full training, supervision and competency assessment will be provided, and you will not undertake these responsibilities independently until you have been appropriately trained and signed off as competent.

  • Provide high-quality, attentive waking-night support within the childs home.
  • Remain awake, alert and responsive throughout the full waking-night shift.
  • Monitor the child in accordance with their individual care plan and risk assessments.
  • Follow agreed night-time routines and clinical guidance.
  • Following training and competency sign-off, support the safe use of the childs BiPAP equipment.
  • Ensure the childs BiPAP mask remains appropriately in place and respond in accordance with your training and the childs care plan when intervention is required.
  • Recognise changes in the childs presentation and appropriately escalate health or safety concerns without delay.
  • Recognise and appropriately report any safeguarding concerns.
  • Build and maintain a positive, trusting and professional relationship with the child and family.
  • Communicate effectively with the family, colleagues, managers and relevant professionals.
  • Work within your training, assessed competencies, professional boundaries and Lagans Foundation policies at all times.

Daytime Induction and Competency ShiftsAlthough this particular waking-night package does not routinely involve personal care or play-based support, these remain part of the wider Childrens Play and Health Care Worker role and competency framework.

During your induction, training and competency period, you will therefore be required to undertake daytime shifts. These shifts will enable you to:

  • Get to know the child and build a trusting relationship.
  • Develop positive rapport with the family.
  • Understand the childs individual routines, communication and support needs.
  • Complete required observations and competency assessments.
  • Develop and be assessed in relevant personal care and play-based support competencies.
  • Complete the required BiPAP and ventilation training and competency assessment.

You will only progress to independently supporting the child overnight once the required training and competencies have been completed and both the care team and family are confident with the arrangement.

  • Complete accurate visit records and documentation following each shift.
  • Accurately record relevant observations and support provided throughout the night.
  • Complete accident, incident and safeguarding documentation where required.
  • Accurately log in and out of visits in accordance with the rota and organisational procedures.
  • Administer medication where this forms part of the childs care plan and only after completing the required training and competency assessment.
  • Provide appropriate feedback regarding care plans and risk assessments so that changes can be reviewed promptly where required.
  • Complete other relevant administrative documentation in accordance with organisational procedures.

Training and Professional DevelopmentYou will be expected to:

  • Complete Lagans Foundations comprehensive induction programme.
  • Complete all required online and face-to-face mandatory training.
  • Complete BiPAP and ventilation training and associated competency assessments.
  • Complete relevant daytime competency shifts.
  • Attend team meetings, supervision and observation sessions as required.
  • Maintain all mandatory training and competency requirements.
  • Take responsibility for continuing professional development and maintaining the knowledge and skills required for the role.
  • Work within the limits of your training and assessed competencies at all times.

  • Maintain high standards of professionalism, reliability and timekeeping.
  • Deliver all hours of care assigned to you on the agreed rota.
  • Maintain confidentiality and appropriate professional boundaries.
  • Follow safeguarding, health and safety and care standards.
  • Demonstrate adaptability, resilience and effective communication.
  • Promote equality, diversity and inclusive practice.
  • Represent Lagans Foundation positively when working with children, families, colleagues and other professionals.
  • Contribute to maintaining and continually improving standards of care.

Working PatternThis is a permanent waking-night position with a regular shift of 10:30pm6:30am.

  • Two waking-night shifts one week
  • Three waking-night shifts the following week

This equates to an average of approximately 20 hours per week.

You must be able to reliably commit to the required rota and remain awake, alert and responsive throughout every waking-night shift.

Daytime shifts will also be required during induction, training and competency assessment before you progress to independent waking-night support.
