The post holder will manage a complex outpatient caseload and deliver the physiotherapy component of specialist pain management programmes delivered both face-to-face and virtually. You will work closely with psychologists, nurse specialists, consultants and other members of the multidisciplinary team to support patients in improving function, quality of life and self-management.
Key responsibilities include
- Delivering specialist physiotherapy assessment and treatment for patients with persistent and complex chronic pain conditions.
- Supporting and facilitating interdisciplinary pain management programmes (virtual and face-to-face) and specialist movement groups.
- Contributing to the Inpatient Complex Pain Service.
- Providing specialist advice and support to patients, carers and healthcare professionals.
- Supervising junior physiotherapy staff and supporting professional development within the team.
- Leading and participating in service improvement initiatives, audit, research and education activities.
- Supporting the continued development of innovative pain services, including digital pain management pathways.

Knowledge and Qualifications
Essential
- Degree / diploma in relevant specialism e.g. physiotherapy, occupational therapy, osteopathy etc.
- HCPC registered
- Evidence of post-graduate training in pain to equivalent of modules at Masters level
- Evidence of teaching/delivering training
Desirable
- Evidence of awareness of and/or training in and clinical use of contextualised cognitive behavioural therapy strategies
- Masters degree / working towards a MSc
- Active member of interest group
- Appraisal training
- Experience of working in the NHS
- Member of the relevant professional college or society e.g. CSP
Experience
Essential
- Specific pain experience to include general and specialist pain services
- Previous experience as a band 6/7 or equivalent
- Experience delivering contextualised cognitive behavioural approaches to pain management
- Evidence of having supervised qualified therapy staff
- Evidence initiating and taking audit
- Evidence of teaching a wide range of groups, e.g. therapy colleagues, the multidisciplinary team and external agencies
- Evidence of active participation in the organisation of education programmes
- Evidence and involvement in risk management, quality standard settings and clinical effectiveness
- Evidence of working with groups of patients
Desirable
- Evidence initiating undertaking research
Skills and Abilities
Essential
- Autonomous practitioner with ability work unsupervised
- Evidence of CBT training and clinical experience in a chronic pain setting
- Effective time management and the ability to prioritise own/others workload
- Effective time management and the ability to prioritise own/others workload
- Skills demonstrating highly specialist analytical and diagnostic skills during assessment and intervention
- Ability to plan, coordinate and advise appropriate treatment and evaluate outcomes, using generic and unj disciplinary measures, for patients with highly complex pain
- Demonstrate an ability to prioritise own workload equitable across services as required, responding to unpredictable changes to patients and staffing levels
Communication

- Able to communicate complex, sensitive and contentious information in an understandable form to patients, significant others and all other professionals involved
- Effective written communication skills, including accurate record keeping
- Effective oral communication skills demonstrating negotiating skills and ability to manage and defuse potential conflict

- Ability to supervise staff
- Evidence of up-to-date continued professional development including evidence of reflective practice, in service training, courses attended and clinical experience gained
- Evidence of effective presentation and training skills to a wide-ranging audience e.g. peers, multidisciplinary team
