Our
Healthcare Assistants deliver and assist clinical staff in the provision of
treatment, preventative care, health promotion, long-term condition management
and patient education. They undertake, record and work in accordance with
protocols and guidelines for tasks for which they have received appropriate
training.
An
integral part of the practice team, the post holder will be required to support
the Nurse Manager in ensuring a high-level of service is always delivered
whilst supporting the multi-disciplinary team in line with the objectives of
the practice.
The key responsibilities of a qualified
Healthcare Assistant in the practice who are able to work at a competent level
To
- Consult with patients
and their families to undertake assessments of patient need
- Provide clinical
support to registered nurses and other healthcare professionals within the organisation.
- Support
in the delivery of enhanced services and other service requirements.
- Deliver clinical care
Interventions, such as
Measurement of height and
weight, blood pressure, temperature, pulse and peak flow.
Undertaking venepuncture,
ECGs, ear irrigation, urinalysis.
Ensure specimens are recorded and ready for
onward transportation
Appointments for new patient
health checks, NHS health checks, B12 injections, hosiery measurements, smoking
cessation
Warfarin monitoring with INR
star with support of a nurse prescriber
- Support vaccination clinics.

Simple wound care and suture
removal
Other clinical responsibilities
- Recognise changes in the patients
observations which must be reported and acted on.
- Assist clinicians in emergency management of
patients.
- Enable patients to access appropriated
professionals in the practice team.
- Act as a chaperone.
- Appreciate the principles of Healthy Living.
- Provide relevant health promotion advice and
literature for patients.
- Clearly present patients points of view to
others.
- Recognise the boundaries of their practice and
know when and to whom patients should be referred.
Care Management responsibilities
- Work within national and local protocols where
these exist
- Ensure stock items are ordered, provided and controlled
in treatment rooms.
- Maintain emergency equipment.
- Maintain clinical equipment efficiently.
- Follow infection control standards. Maintain a clean, tidy, effective working area
at all times.
- Undertake fridge audit.
- Contribute new ideas to improve the services
provided by the practice for patient care.
- Instruct patients in appropriate techniques or
tasks.
Other responsibilities
- Be aware of duties and
responsibilities regarding current legislation and adhere to practice policies
and procedures on Safeguarding Adults and Safeguarding Children
- Correctly manage
e-mails and tasks received and send appropriate e-mails and tasks.
- Attend team meetings.
- Attend a formal appraisal with
a manager at least every 12 months. Once a
performance/training objective has been set, progress will be reviewed on a
regular basis so that new objectives can be agreed.
The organisational purpose of the Blackdown Practice is to provide high quality clinical and dispensing services to the practice population.
We aim to deliver a service that staff would wish for a family member and that staff and patients would recommend to others.
We need to meet the regulatory requirements within budget to enable the practice to thrive.
We want those working in the practice to enjoy their roles and maintain the correct balance of caring for patients, caring for each other and caring for themselves.
Qualifications
Essential
- GSCE (or equivalent) English and Math at Grade C (4) or above
- Trained can meet the standards in the Care Certificate or hold an NVQ level 2 or 3 qualification
- Trainee Be willing to work towards meeting the standards in the Care Certificate
Skills
Essential
- Trained - able to measure height and weight, BMI, blood pressure, temperature, pulse and peak flow.
- Trainee - be prepared to learn how to undertake the above.
- Trained - able to perform venepuncture, ECGs, ear irrigation, urinalysis, removal of sutures and staples.
- Trainee - be prepared to learn how to undertake the above.
- Ability to work within own scope of practice and understanding when to refer to colleagues.
- Excellent communication skills (written and oral)
- Strong IT skills, competent in the use of Office and Outlook
- Effective time management (planning and organising)
- Ready to adapt by being receptive to new ideas; willing and able to adjust to changing demands and circumstances
- Ability to work as a team member and autonomously
- Good interpersonal skills
- Problem solving and analytical skills
- Ability to follow policy and procedure
- Ability to effectively manage stock, including ordering, rotation, disposal etc.
- Ability to work accurately with a high level of attention to detail
Other requirements
Essential
- Flexibility to work across the site teams
- Flexibility to work outside of core office hours if necessary
- Disclosure Barring Service (DBS) check
- Evidence of continuing professional development
Experience
Essential
- Experience of working in a health or social care environment
- Experience of working with the general public or patients
- Have a clear understanding of the importance of confidentiality
Desirable
- Broad knowledge of general practice
- Good clinical system IT knowledge of EMIS, SystmOne, Vision or Medicus and the ability to record accurate clinical notes
