The postholder will work as an Assistant Psychologist in AID-IIT to support and co-work with qualified clinical and counselling psychologists (and other members of the multi-disciplinary team) to deliver multi-disciplinary consultation, assessment, interventions and training to young people, families and their professional networks. The role includes work across a range of settings - offering outreach work in community settings, in reach work in inpatient settings, and working from the Pears Centre, depending on the needs of the young person, family and network. Please note this is an in person/on-site role. The role will also involve contributing to service developments, service evaluation and supporting the robust collection of outcome data for AID-IIT.
The postholder will work within the AID-IIT to provide Assistant Psychologist support to our assessments and interventions, and work as part of a multi-disciplinary team including:
Contributing to specialist assessments alongside qualified colleagues. Delivering outreach interventions to young people with Autism or Intellectual Disabilities under supervision from a qualified psychologist. To use and support the team in using and collecting routine outcome measures and to contribute to service evaluation, audit and research. To work flexibly as needed across settings offering outreach work when needed for example seeing young people in inpatient settings, family homes, community settings across London as required.
The AID-IIT is a National and Specialist (N&S) CAMHS outpatient team covering the London area. The team aim to reduce or prevent where possible inpatient CAMHS admissions for children and young people with a diagnosis of Autism and/or Intellectual Disability, and to support these young people to continue to live within the community. We benefit from working in close collaboration with the SCAAND and other N&S CAMHS teams, CAMHS inpatient settings and community CAMHS teams across London. The post holder will be part of a multi-disciplinary team including Clinical and Counselling Psychologists, Consultant Psychiatrists, Clinical Nurse Specialists, Assistant Psychologists, Occupational Therapists, Speech and Language Therapists, Senior Educational Psychologist and Admin support.
The AID-IIT are based at the new Pears Maudsley Centre for Children and Young People with other staff from N&S CAMHS, facilitating close working, academic/learning opportunities and good support for the postholder.
Qualifications
Essential
- A First-class or Upper-second-class Bachelor's degree with Honours in Psychology that is accredited by the British Psychological Society and confers the Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership of the British Psychological Society (A)
Experience
Essential
- Sufficient post-graduate experience of psychological assessment and intervention for children and young people with ASD and Intellectual Disability to be able to work clinically with close direct supervision (A)
- Experience that supports working with, and addressing issues of, diversity within local communities. This may have been gained through work, research, volunteering and / or lived experience (A)
Understanding and Knowledge
Essential
- Good theoretical knowledge of the problems experienced by and needs of young people with ASD and of methods of assessment and treatment (A).
- Awareness of racial and diversity issues (e.g through attendance of relevant training) (A).
Skills
Essential
- Skills in relevant psychological assessment and interventions that enable working as a pre-qualified practitioner with close clinical supervision (A)
- Well-developed verbal and written communication skills, including an ability to communicate complex information to service users, families, and colleagues (A/I)
Abilities

- Ability to work effectively within a multi-disciplinary team, participating in effective team functioning and holding team roles (A)
- Ability to manage occasional emotionally stressful situations such as working with victims of abuse or trauma, or with people who engage in severe self-harming or aggressive behaviour (A)
- Ability to communicate complex, sensitive or contentious information to people who may have impediments to understanding (A/I)
