Job description

Band 6 Triage Midwife Join Our Maternity Triage Team as a Band 6 Telephone Triage Midwife! We're excited to welcome a Band 6 Telephone Triage Midwif...

The core role within the Maternity Assessment team will provide clinical advice, support, and guidance to all individuals contacting the Maternity Assessment Unit (MAU). This will include providing real-time clinical advice to women, undertaking comprehensive risk assessments, and identifying the most appropriate care pathways to ensure safe, effective, and timely outcomes.

The Telephone Triage Midwife will be responsible for liaising with relevant departments and healthcare professionals to facilitate timely access to appropriate care and ensure that women are assessed and managed in the most suitable clinical setting.

Clinical advice will be informed by a rapid yet thorough assessment of the symptoms and concerns described during the telephone consultation. This assessment will take into consideration any previous telephone calls or attendances at the Maternity Assessment Unit, identified risk factors, and relevant medical, obstetric, or psychological history. The midwife will use professional judgement and clinical expertise to determine the appropriate level of care and escalation required.

The role will also provide opportunities for the Telephone Triage Midwife to work clinically within the Maternity Assessment Unit, undertaking face-to-face assessments and contributing to the delivery of high-quality, holistic maternity care.

Here in Oxfordshire, we offer a unique set up of our Maternity Services with around 7500 babies born annually.

We have 4 stand-alone Midwifery-Led Birth units within the county and also offer home births to all areas. There is also an integrated Midwifery-Led birth unit, where around 10% of women and birthing people choose to go in labour. As a tertiary hospital, the John Radcliffe is composed of a Delivery Suite with 3 Maternity Theatres and a specific Maternity Recovery Ward. We work closely with specialist services such as the Fetal and Maternal Medicine Unit, Breech Team, and Maternity Bereavement Teams. Midwives employed within the service have the opportunity to rotate to all our units/departments providing care to both low and high risk women.

For those working with us, we have a substantial support network for staff, focusing on wellbeing and development. This includes a team of professional Midwifery Advocates, Wellbeing Champions, staff networks and a staff Maternity Psychologist. You will be supported by the Practice Development Team who provide regular study days and updates and support staff clinically. We champion diversity and strive to ensure every member of our team feels included, valued, and has the confidence to speak up and be heard.

We genuinely believe that by supporting our staff to feel happy and offering support within their work environment, we ensure the best quality of care for the women and birthing people who access our services.
