You will contribute to the delivery of a high-quality service within the specialist area of neurosciences. The successful applicant will provide out-patient clinics at The James Cook University Hospital, run a group for patients with Parkinson's Disease, with support from an assistant, and provide inpatient assessment for those with Parkinson's Disease. They would also have sessions on an acute neurology and neurosurgery ward, and intensive care, depending on experience. There may be an opportunity to work within other specialist areas eg Stroke / acute wards, depending on service need and individual preference.
Regular support will be provided both from your line manager and through peer supervision. The existing team consists of 4 other therapists, each with different skill sets and responsibilities, and 1 assistant.
You will be encouraged to take an active role in service improvement (both within our own service and our wider healthcare teams), clinical governance and continuing professional development of self and others in leadership and mentorship.

Knowledge and skills (Band 7)
Essential
- IT skills
- Experience with use of electronic note systems e.g. SystmOne/EPR
- Audit and research experience
- To display effective communication skills, communicating complex, sensitive and contentious information to patients, carers and colleagues
- Knowledge of national and professional guidelines and evidence-based practice related to specialist area
Knowledge and skills (Band 6)
Essential
- Completed post basic dysphagia training & competencies
- IT competence
Desirable
- Videofluoroscopy competence
Qualifications and training (Band 7)
Essential
- To hold a degree or relevant Diploma in Speech & Language Therapy
- To be a registered member of the Health Care Professions Council
- To have advanced post-graduate training in dysphagia (can be in house or external)
- Leadership qualifications or training
Desirable
- Member of RCSLT
Qualifications and training (Band 6)
Essential
- Degree and licence to practice as a SLT as approved by RSCLT
- To be a registered member of the Health Care Professions Council
Desirable
- Registered member of RCSLT
- Attendance at leadership & development programme
Experience (Band 7)
Essential
- To have substantial post graduate experience including work with patients with neurological conditions in an acute and rehabilitation setting
- To have experience in the management of dysphagia, ideally including videofluoroscopy
- Experience of working within the NHS
- Leadership experience
Desirable
- Evidence of relevant post graduate courses or study at Masters level or equivalent
- To have experience in management and/or supervising other staff members in a team
Experience (Band 6)
Essential
- Post graduate experience of working with adults with acquired / progressive neurological disorders
- MDT working experience
- Previous NHS experience
Desirable
- Experience of videofluoroscopy
- Experience of tracheostomy
