Why this role?

Are you a qualified Social Worker with at least 2 Years experience

Are you looking for a unique and exciting opportunity to work in a new way?

If so, this could be the job for you.

We are seeking a motivated and experienced Peripatetic Social Worker to join our dynamic social work workforce. This is a rare and exciting opportunity for social workers who want to gain a broad range of experiences working in different areas of Children’s Social Care and who may aspire to be a Senior Practitioner or Practice Manager in the future.

The Peripatetic Social Worker will provide flexible, high-quality social work support across Children's Social Care services, including Assessment, Supporting and Strengthening Families, Children Cared For, Kinship and other service areas as required.

The postholder will contribute to maintaining effective service delivery during periods of increased demand, staff absence, vacancies, service developments and implementation of new practice initiatives. They will undertake assessments, interventions, care planning and direct work with children, young people and families while promoting positive outcomes through restorative, relational and strengths-based practice.

The role requires a confident and adaptable practitioner who can quickly establish effective working relationships, manage complex cases and maintain high standards of practice across a variety of service settings.

In South Tyneside, our children and families are at the heart of everything we do. We want every child and family to feel supported in times of need and empowered to make positive and lasting change. Our practice is underpinned by a restorative and relational approach, enabling social workers to build meaningful relationships with children, young people and families, recognising strengths, promoting resilience and creating sustainable solutions together. We take pride in our social work teams, where staff are valued, supported and encouraged to develop, and where we work together to deliver the best possible outcomes for children and families.

In June 2026, Ofsted recognised the significant progress made across South Tyneside Children's Services, with services judged Good for children who need help and protection, Good for children in care, Outstanding for care leavers, and Good for the impact of leaders on social work practice with children and families. Inspectors described South Tyneside's workforce as "an asset" and found that staff feel part of something special, valuing the support, supervision and development opportunities available to them.

We have a skilled and committed workforce where staff feel valued and are proud to work in South Tyneside. Ofsted recognised that our restorative and relational approach is embedded across services and provides a secure foundation for effective and impactful practice. Combined with strong leadership, excellent development opportunities and outstanding support for care leavers, there has never been a better time to join our team.
