Job description

We have an exciting opportunity for an Occupational Therapist to join Southampton City Council’s newly formed Home Adaptation Service.

In Southampton, we are currently transforming the way we deliver home adaptations. We also share the SCC Social Care Future Vision—supporting people to live in a place they call home, with the people and things they love, in communities that look out for one another, doing what matters most to them.

This is an excellent time to join us as we continue to innovate and develop our Occupational Therapy offer as part of a wider transformation programme and the establishment of a new city-wide Home Adaptation Service. We are committed to investing in our future and strengthening our directorate to deliver high-quality, person-centred support for adults across the city.

Our team supports adult residents of Southampton who require assessment for major adaptations to access essential facilities within their homes and to maximise independence.

We complete home visits across the city and make recommendations for:

  • Major adaptations funded via the Disabled Facilities Grant/ Discretionary Financial Assistance Policy
  • Adaptations delivered through Southampton City Council Housing Revenue Account
  • Specialist equipment and minor works when required

You will be part of a supportive, collaborative team with strong links across housing, health, and social care services.

As an Occupational Therapist within the Home Adaptation Service, you will:

  • Carry out holistic, person-centred assessments in people’s homes
  • Recommend appropriate major adaptations and equipment to meet assessed needs
  • Work closely with a range of internal and external partners, including:
  • Disabled Facilities Grant Officers
  • Southampton City Council Housing Adaptations
  • Adult Social Care
  • Community Independence Service
  • Relevant NHS and community health teams
  • Support the delivery of safe, effective, and timely adaptation pathways
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement and development of the service.

We are looking for confident and self-motivated individuals who:

  • Have excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Can work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Are committed to delivering high-quality, strengths-based practice
  • Can demonstrate sound clinical reasoning and problem-solving skills
  • Are adaptable and willing to contribute to a new, exciting overarching adaptation service

It is also desirable to have experience working in the community and recommending major adaptations for adults. However, training and regular supervision will be provided, and we welcome applications from newly qualified or less experienced Occupational Therapists.

You must

  • Hold a degree or diploma in Occupational Therapy
  • Be registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC)

Salary: The salary band for this role is £43,150 - £47,664. The starting salary is £43,150 with annual progression through the salary band.

Here at SCC, we have a range of different perks and benefits, a few examples can be found below.

  • Excellent local government pension with 16.8% employer contribution
  • Death in service benefit of x3 salary, and optional salary sacrifice shared cost AVC (additional voluntary contribution)
  • Generous holiday 25–31 days, based on role and service
  • Flexible working options with working a mixture of office and home, outside of your face-to-face visits with the individuals we support
  • Opportunities for training and development
  • Supportive management and regular professional supervision
  • Family-friendly policies - Maternity, Paternity, Adoption, Shared/Unpaid Parental Leave, Time off for Dependents
