  • Provide expert midwifery assessment, care and advice to women attending the Maternity Assessment Unit.
  • Undertake comprehensive assessment, recognise clinical deterioration and initiate appropriate management and escalation.
  • Ensure care is provided in accordance with Trust policies, national guidance, professional standards and evidence-based practice.
  • Act as an effective clinical role model, demonstrating high standards of professional practice.
  • Provide appropriate advice, information and support to women and their families, ensuring informed choice and shared decision making.
  • Ensure appropriate investigations, observations and clinical assessments are undertaken and documented.
  • Liaise effectively with obstetricians, anaesthetists, neonatal teams and other members of the multidisciplinary team.
  • Ensure timely escalation of clinical concerns and facilitate appropriate admissions, transfer or discharges.
  • Promote safe and effective patient flow through the Maternity Assessment Unit.
  • Ensure accurate, contemporaneous documentation and effective communication at all times.
  • Support the management of complex and high-risk pregnancies in accordance with local and national guidance.
  • Maintain awareness of safeguarding responsibilities and escalate concerns appropriately.

Qualifications

Essential: - Current registration with NMC; - Relevant degree or equivalent; - Evidence of professional development

Desirable: - NLS accreditation; - Must be willing to work towards further development

Experience

Essential

  • Significant post-registration experience as a midwife
  • Substantial experience in an acute maternity setting
  • Experience of assessing and managing women with a range of pregnancy-related presentations
  • Experience of managing clinical risk and escalating concerns

Desirable: - Previous Band 7 or equivalent senior midwifery experience; - Experience within a Maternity Assessment Unit/triage environment

Skills and Knowledge

Essential

  • Excellent clinical assessment and decision-making skills
  • Ability to recognise and respond appropriately to clinical deterioration
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to prioritise workload and manage competing demands
  • Good understanding of clinical governance, risk management and safeguarding

Desirable: - Advanced skills relevant to maternity assessment
