Locum Consultant in Adult Infectious Diseases

• Infections in patients with cancer. Guys Hospital is the SE sector regional hub for Cancer including medical, clinical and surgical oncology (the new Cancer Centre opened in 2016) and has a large malignant and non-malignant haematology service.
• Infections in Renal Transplant and Urology services. Guys has an active kidney and pancreas transplant programme supporting the sector and is the hub for renal services and dialysis providing for a dialysis population of approx. 900 in 8 satellite units.
• Is considered a centre of excellence for complex elective orthopaedic and spinal services having been commissioned as SE sector hub for joint revision surgery for upper and lower limb.
• The site also houses the regional Thoracic surgical, Head and Neck and ENT and Urology surgical groups.
• There is a well-established OPAT team providing OPAT services for Guys and St Thomas patients, with expanding links into the South East London virtual ward initiative.
• Individual consultants have their own areas of specialist expertise and this post will initially support the cancer services and Intensive care. All consultants will deliver: - Ward-based infection consults and telephone advice on the diagnosis, management and prevention of infection in response to referrals and significant laboratory results.
• Support for development of specialist service guidelines and quality improvement initiatives
• Timetabled multi-disciplinary clinical meetings and ward rounds, e.g. Critical Care, medical and surgical board rounds, anti-microbial stewardship etc.
• Support ID outpatient clinics in close conjunction with the sub-specialist service.
• Specialist Registrar clinical supervision (2 SpRs attached to Guys service)
• Dependant on skill set there would be an expectation to support the Infection Sciences laboratory services alongside the other site microbiologists. Laboratory duties will include result authorisation, contribution to the day-to-day running of the diagnostic service, troubleshooting of unexpected results and active participation in laboratory management and development. Alongside existing RBHH and GSTT, and KCH and PRUH, consultant colleagues they will also support the work embedding services into the new large, multi-hospital offsite laboratory hub which opened in Autumn 2025.
• The post-holder will be expected to contribute to the induction and training of the StRs rotating to Microbiology/Virology/Infectious Diseases and may be required to take an active part in postgraduate teaching and training and participate in KCL Medical School undergraduate teaching in years 2 and 3.
• Work closely with clinical teams, pharmacists and the IPC nursing team to support and develop local clinical guidelines, manage outbreaks, and deliver key performance objectives (e.g. C. difficile, blood stream infections etc.) and staff education/training. There will be a particular focus on leading antimicrobial stewardship within Cancer and Surgery on the Guys Hospital site (bacterial and fungal).
• All consultants will have PA allocation for specific responsibilities e.g. antimicrobial stewardship, IPC, clinic, OPAT.
• The post-holder will participate in the non-resident on-call rota which will be shared equally with the other consultants in the Microbiology section. Weekend authorisation is performed by the on-call Infection consultant, this can be done remotely, and no weekend on-site presence is generally required.
• If CCT dual accreditation is in ID/GIM, there would be an equal intention to support the Infection Sciences laboratory services alongside result authorisation, and participation in the non-resident on-call rota for microbiology after a suitable period of time. Prospective applicants would be expected to have experience through previous training or prior employment in Microbiology to enable delivery of this essential service. Exact arrangements can be negotiated with the successful applicant.

• Full and Specialist GMC Registration and current licence to practise.

• Comprehensive experience across the range of adult infectious diseases
• Experience in writing clinical infection and/or laboratory guidelines
• Working knowledge in Infection Prevention and Control in the acute care setting e.g. management of outbreaks
• Working knowledge and experience of antimicrobial stewardship

Desirable

• Expert knowledge and experience in management of infection in the non-HIV immunocompromised host, eg. Transplant or cancer patients
• Expert knowledge and experience in the diagnosis and management of infections in renal patient populations
• Expert knowledge and experience in orthopaedic and/or diabetic foot infections
• Expert knowledge and experience in OPAT
• Leading or managing a diagnostic laboratory
• Introduction of new laboratory tests into the diagnostic repertoire
• Managing change in order to deliver clinical infection or infection control targets
• Post-graduate IPC qualification

• Operating an Infectious Diseases clinical consult service and contributing to multidisciplinary clinical meetings
• Clinical assessment and management of infection in Critical Care patients
