The GP Assistant will primarily support the Lead GP and wider clinical team by ensuring smooth, efficient day-to-day clinical, administration and patient care processes.

Key aspects of the role include managing and coding clinical correspondence, supporting patient pathways, maintaining accurate clinical records, and working closely with clinicians to streamline workflows. The role also includes delegated clinical support tasks, depending on experience, with full training provided for candidates who are keen to develop clinical skills.

This is a varied and dynamic role requiring excellent organisational skills, attention to detail, and a strong understanding of how primary care operates.

The post-holder is a GP Assistant or Medical Assistant.

The post-holder will

report to the Practice Manager and the Clinical Lead, supporting the GP team to

ensure the efficient provision of medical services and clinics by performing

several more routine administrative and clinical duties. This will allow the GPs

to utilise their own time more effectively towards greater patient focused

activities.

Additionally, this role will support

both the nursing and administrative teams in the delivery of clinical and

administrative services, working as part of the practice multidisciplinary

team, delivering care within their scope of practice to the entitled patient

population.

Utilising the NHS Health Education England GPA Competency

Framework, the post-holder working within

general practice/primary care will provide capabilities within care,

administration, clinical, communications and health records management.

Primary key responsibilities

The following are the core responsibilities of

the GP Assistant in delivering health services. There may be, on occasion, a

requirement to carry out other tasks and this will be dependent upon factors

Such as workload and staffing levels

a.

Provide support to GPs by taking patient history and

baseline observations prior to the patient seeing the GP

b.

Completing simple clinical observations /

investigations as directed locally, such as dipstick urine, blood pressure,

ECG and phlebotomy

c.

Facilitate routine and 24-hour BP monitoring,

advising patients accordingly

d.

Carry out BMI checks as directed

e.

Act as a chaperone as required

f.

When trained, to support the GP with immunisations

g. Completing basic

(non-opinion) forms and core elements of some forms for the GP to approve and

sign such as insurance forms, mortgage, benefits agency forms etc.

h. Extracting all the

required information from clinical letters, applying medical codes as

required and adding these to patient notes

i.

Support the delivery of QOF, incentive schemes, QIPP

and other quality or cost effectiveness initiatives

j.

Support practice patients by arranging appointments,

onward referrals, clinical tests and follow up appointments.

k. Explain treatment

procedures to patients

l.

Develop and agree a personal development plan

utilising a reflective approach to practice, operating under appropriate

clinical supervision

Qualifications

Essential

  • * GCSE grade A to C in English and Maths
  • * Completed, working towards or the willingness to complete the HEE General Practice Assistant (GPA) Competency Framework

Desirable

  • * Phlebotomy certification
  • * Vaccination certification
  • * Other clinical skills certification

Experience

Essential

  • *Experience of working in a primary care setting
  • *Experience of working within a higher admin function role in a GP practice
  • *Experience of working in a healthcare setting

Desirable

  • *Understanding and knowledge of healthcare provision in GP surgeries, QOF, Enhanced Services and national standards that inform practice (NSF, NICE Guidelines)
  • *An appreciation of the new NHS landscape including the relationships between the practice, PCN and the commissioners

Knowledge and skills

Essential

  • *Good organisational skills, enthusiastic and dynamic member of the team
  • *Ability to work within own scope of practice and understanding when to escalate to GPs
  • *Good clinical system IT knowledge (EMIS or SystmOne)
  • *Ability to record accurate notes and records
  • *Can process primary care incoming and outcoming documents; triaging according to need and filing where appropriate
  • *Has a good knowledge of and experience using read codes to record accurate information in patient notes
  • *Problem solver with the ability to process information accurately and effectively, interpreting data as required

Desirable

  • * Good IT skills
  • * Can effectively utilise resources to enhance their work
