Join us in raising the standard of private housing across Lancaster. As an Environmental Health Officer, you’ll play a vital role in ensuring safe, healthy, and energy-efficient homes for our community. Your work will directly improve living conditions, reduce hazards like damp and mould, and support efforts to tackle fuel poverty, making a real impact on residents’ wellbeing.
You’ll manage your own caseload, inspecting properties and working closely with landlords, tenants, and agents to promote compliance with housing legislation. Using negotiation, education, and enforcement, you’ll help improve housing quality and safety. You’ll also provide expert advice, prepare reports, support licensing schemes, and represent the council in legal settings. Collaboration with community groups and partner agencies will be key to delivering positive outcomes.
You have a degree in Environmental Health or equivalent experience, with strong knowledge of UK housing law and private sector issues. Your excellent communication and interpersonal skills help you handle sensitive situations with diplomacy and confidence. You’re proactive, take ownership, and work well with others, reflecting our values of Working Together, Ambition, Pride, and Ownership. A driving licence is essential as home visits are part of the role.
