Job description

This is an exciting and substantive consultant post at the heart of Greater Manchester's community mental health transformation. The post holder will ...

  • Provide specialist psychiatric assessment and diagnosis for patients referred to the NMHT, including new referrals from the Referral and Assessment Hub, GPs, and other agencies.
  • Carry a direct caseload of patients within the neighbourhood team, providing evidence-based treatment, medication management, and ongoing clinical oversight.
  • Provide daily consultation, clinical advice, and second-opinion input to MDT colleagues across the full team caseload -- including advice to GPs for patients not currently open to secondary care.
  • Conduct Mental Health Act assessments and, where clinically appropriate, apply for detention under the MHA 1983 (as amended 2007) as a Section 12(2) approved doctor.
  • Assess, manage, and review patients under the Care Programme Approach (CPA), ensuring care plans are person-centred, co-produced, and regularly reviewed.
  • Provide psychiatric input to multidisciplinary care planning meetings, CPA reviews, and complex case conferences.
  • Prescribe and review psychotropic medication in line with NICE guidelines, Trust formulary, and shared care protocols, including clozapine monitoring where appropriate.
  • Provide psychiatric opinion for Mental Health Tribunal hearings, Hospital Managers' hearings, safeguarding processes, and other legal or statutory proceedings as required.

Qualifications

Essential: - MB BS or equivalent medical qualification

Eligibility

  • Fully registered with the GMC with a licence to practise at the time of appointment
  • Included on the GMC Specialist Register OR within six months
  • Approved clinician status OR able to achieve within 3 months of appointment
  • Approved under S12 OR able to achieve with 3 months of appointment

Knowledge

Essential: - Excellent knowledge in specialty
