Consultant Ophthalmologist – Specialist Interest Glaucoma

This is an additional post to support UHB Ophthalmology services in Glaucoma and the successful applicant will be expected to establish a service to help meet the clinical requirements of the workload from across the region. It is anticipated that the post holder will have post-CCT subspecialty training in Glaucoma. The post holder will be expected to contribute to the research portfolio of the department. There is an expectation that the post holder will cross site travel, as sessions will be at any of the hospital sites.

Flexibility with regard to the timetabling of fixed sessions will be expected. We are working towards a three session day so some of the timetabled fixed sessions may be evening sessions and/or weekend sessions. We are also increasing our provision of community ophthalmology and thus clinics may include review of remotely acquired investigations. Flexible/annualised sessions may be included for some theatre sessions to support the department maximising theatre capacity for our patients.

At present there are no regular on-call or out of hours duties. The trust is a Stage one Trauma Centre and out of hours provision at UHB may be necessary in the future. It is expected that the clinical team participate in supporting the review of ward referrals in clinic.

Clinical sessions deemed clinical activities are by definition 4 hours and the successful appointee will be expected to work flexibly.

The successful candidate is expected to have a minimum of 4 years post-graduate training in general ophthalmology and in addition have further training and experience in managing glaucoma patients. The successful applicant is expected to have a good understanding of modern glaucoma management and be capable of managing routine glaucoma cases. Clinical experience of managing acute glaucoma and complex glaucoma cases is essential for this post. The applicant should also be able to undertake routine cataract surgery, experience of glaucoma laser treatment (SLT, YAG, Diode) and glaucoma surgery.

The consultant will also be responsible to the Clinical Service Leads of the Department, Ms Anjali Gupta, and Ms Anju Kadyan

The department provides ophthalmology services to a large part of the Birmingham population and is a busy department. There is ample opportunity to see a wide spectrum of cases.

The glaucoma service manages adult patients with the whole spectrum of glaucoma. There is scope to perform the full range of glaucoma procedures including SLT and YAG laser, complex cataract surgery in glaucoma patients, minimally-Invasive Glaucoma Surgery (MIGS), Trabeculectomy, Preserflo and Tube Surgery under both general and local anaesthesia.
