Qualifications & Training

Essential: - Full GMC registration; - MRCP or equivalent; - FRCR or equivalent; - Entry on the Specialist Register (or expected within 12 months )

Desirable: - MD or PhD

Experience

Essential

  • Broad oncology background with specific skills as required in the agreed job description
  • Ability to offer expert clinical opinion across a wide range of oncological situations both elective and emergency.
  • Ability to take full and independent responsibility for the clinical care of patients and be able to work in a multidisciplinary team.

Desirable: - Specialist experience in Breast and HPB cancers

Knowledge & Skills

Essential

  • Up to date knowledge and experience of relevant specialty
  • Commitment to continuing medical education.
  • Knowledge of NHS priorities with reference to specialty skills in oncology.

Desirable: - IT Skills

Clinical Governance & Audit

Essential

  • Awareness of the requirements of clinical governance, with particular reference to the speciality.
  • Experience in organising audit.
  • Ability to organise efficient and smooth running specialist service.
  • Ability to organise and prioritise workload.

Research

Essential

  • Knowledge of the ethics, principles and practice of clinical research and proven participation in clinical research.
  • GCP training.
  • Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical problems.

Desirable

  • Publications in peer reviewed journals
  • Ability to increase the academic profile of the Directorate.
  • Experience in implementing, developing and evaluating undergraduate and/or postgraduate training.
  • Interest in clinical research and experience in supervising undergraduate +/- postgraduate research projects

Teaching & Training

Essential

  • Experience and interest in teaching of staff, both undergraduate and postgraduate and from all disciplines
  • Experience of supervising trainees.
  • Knowledge of teaching to a multidisciplinary team.

Management & Leadership

Essential

  • Evidence of management training and evidence of learning from it.
  • Ability to organise efficient and smooth running of a specialist service
  • Ability to cope with and effectively organise the workload of a consultant.
  • Ability to practice independently as a consultant.
  • Ability to take on responsibility and show evidence of leadership.
  • Ability to work under pressure and cope with setbacks.

Desirable: - Demonstration of knowledge of NHS management structures; - Management experience

Interpersonal, communication & team working skills

Essential

  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients, relatives, clinical colleagues, support staff and other colleagues.
  • Good knowledge of, and ability to use, spoken and written English.
  • Ability to present effectively to an audience, using a variety of methods, and to respond to questions and queries.
  • Ability to develop effective working relationships on an individual and multi-professional basis with all levels of staff both within and across divisions.
  • Ability to be a flexible team member.
