CAMHS Practitioner Training in Systemic Family Practice

You must attend an interview and be enrolled at the University of Northampton. The postgraduate diploma is a full-time programme with 36-40 days of face-to-face/online teaching, 36 days of practice-based learning and 6 days of assessment. You would need 8 cases, and a minimum of 48 sessions and 60 clinical hours. The study commitment is 125 hours of independent study time.

The course requires academic study including writing essays, case studies and completing a portfolio. Students who have not completed a first degree may register for the PG Diploma as an associate student and transfer to full diploma once they have passed their first level 7 module.

You would work clinically within the CAMHS partnership / Family Therapy team, hold a caseload, attend MDT meetings and attend statutory & mandatory training. You would be supervised by a qualified family therapist from CAMHS and attend small group supervision at the University.

You will hold a caseload of patients with varying levels of complexity, demonstrating awareness of how moderate to severe mental health difficulties affect children and young people. You will work with experienced clinicians and provide assessment and intervention to CYPs to promote mental health recovery.

You will undertake risk assessments and risk management of individuals presenting with vulnerability, self-harm and/or physical, sexual or emotional harm to themselves or others. You will need to manage and respond to the distress of others and access additional support and advice when needed.

You will work closely with other members of MDTs and liaise with partnership agencies supporting interventions that are evidence based and meet the needs of the young person. You will work with autonomy and initiative within the limits of your knowledge, experience and professional training, attending clinical and management supervision, and working collaboratively as part of the wider MDT.
