Band 6 Endocrinology Clinical Nurse Specialist

• Provide an evidence-based specialist Endocrinology and Metabolism nursing service, to a cohort of patients referred to the endocrinology team. Care will reflect current local protocols and national guidelines and will be delivered through face-to-face consultation within the MDT clinics; by telephone or via electronic communication on a day-to-day basis.
• To ensure that all patient referrals are dealt with promptly and efficiently.
• Demonstrate practice skills in the holistic assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of care for the cohort of patients within the specialist service. This will necessitate high levels of autonomy and advocacy, using analytical and judgmental skills in undertaking nurse-led consultation to ensure the delivery of appropriate care.
• Manage a cohort of patients and prioritise workload to meet patient and service need.
• Undertake clinical training and supervision to achieve appropriate competencies relevant to this specialist service (e.g. endocrine and late effects nurse-led clinics; dynamic function tests; preparation, administration and monitoring of specialist endocrine treatment; health assessment and non-medical prescribing) to demonstrate expertise in specialist Endocrinology and Metabolism nursing roles.
• Provide counselling to patients and families within the level of skills and expertise.

Essential

• Can demonstrate expert nursing knowledge in Endocrinology and/or research nursing with an ability to assess, plan, implement and evaluate specialist care delivered to patients and give advice and information to patients / relatives/ care staff
• Awareness of current research related to Endocrinology
• Knowledge of current evidence-based practice and ability to apply to service and policy development
• Awareness of current relevant NHS policy context relating to the specialty

Essential

• Registered Adult Nurse on the NMC Register
• Evidence of post registration qualification (e.g. Society for Endocrinology Endocrine Nurse Certificate or PGD in Endocrinology or equivalent post-graduate course in Specialist/Advanced)
• Recognised mentorship or teaching/assessing course

Desirable

• Independent Non-Medical Prescriber
• Advanced health assessment module

Essential

• Evidence and ability to revalidate as required by the NMC
• Significant years post registration experience as a Clinical Nurse Specialist at Band 6 or above in Endocrinology or Oncology/Haematology Or Research Nurse Experience
• Experience of patient service user advocacy role
• Demonstrate expert knowledge underpinned by theory and CPD relevant to specialty

Desirable

• Significant years of experience as a nurse
• Experience and knowledge in performing and interpreting dynamic function tests
• Experience in service development

• Ability to explain the requirement to balance clinical caseload
• Ability to communicate with a wide range of healthcare professionals, on a variety of complex and sensitive issues which require persuasive and empathetic skill
• Ability to work autonomously, manage / prioritise own workload, supervise / appraise and asses junior staff
• Ability to work as a core member of the multidisciplinary team
• Ability to develop clinical guideline, protocols and management pathways
