University Hospitals Plymouth is the Major Trauma Centre for the Southwest. The Trauma and Orthopaedic department is a busy department with two main trauma wards (60 beds) looking after a wide range of trauma presentations. The hospital also has Neurosurgery, Plastic Surgery and Thoracic surgery Units on site and caters for multiply injured patients from the Peninsula region.
The successful candidate will have the opportunity to gain experience in the peri-operative management of these patients on the ward with a daily senior (Middle grade or Consultant) ward round. Elective operating covers all aspects of Orthopaedics, and a new theatre suite is currently being built. This post will include the ward care of elective patients from all Orthopaedic subspecialities including paediatrics.
The successful candidate will have the opportunity to gain experience in the peri-operative management of these patients on the ward with a daily Consultant ward round.
This post is suited to those individuals with an interest in surgery or medical education and aims to develop their portfolios for future training applications.
- To provide day to day in-patient care.
- To carry out a daily ward round and to accompany Senior Staff ward rounds.
- To maintain in-patient notes, admissions, follow-up and discharges, unless already completed by consultants.
- To deal with emergencies immediately they are admitted and inform Specialist Registrar on duty.
- To prepare discharge notes to GPs
- To prepare operation lists, obtain patients consent for surgery, mark correct limb and notify Anaesthetist. To assist Senior Staff in theatre.
NB priority for theatre sessions is given for Deanery trainees requiring theatre exposure to meet their training requirements. All staff will be asked for their particular interests and where possible, will be allocated duties, accordingly, including attending theatre if appropriate.

Normal working day 0800-1730
On-call full shift 0800-2030 Mon Thurs, Fri Sun
Night full shift 2000-0830 Mon Thurs, Fri-Sun
Weekend ward cover 0800-1730
Part of the role is to cover ward duties and we have introduced 2 x 5-day week blocks of working on wards within each rota cycle (1xShaugh Ward, 1xSharp Ward) to improve continuity of care and training planning. The expectation, when possible, will be to swap these weeks with colleagues when wanting to take leave but this is not currently formally prospectively covered.
Teaching takes place currently on Monday mornings, Thursday lunchtime and Fridays.

The post holder will be professionally accountable to the Medical Director and managerially accountable to the Service Line Director Mr Mark Williams, Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon and to Ms Tara Sees, Deputy Directorate Manager, and Dr Siobhan Moyes, Lead in Anatomy, Peninsula Medical School.

Essential: - MBBS or equivalent medical qualification.

- Minimum of 2 years of postgraduate medical experience (equivalent to that obtained in a UK Foundation Training programme) Evidence of attainment of F2 competencies or equivalent. No more than 4 years of post-graduate orthopaedic experience Appropriate knowledge base and ability to apply sound clinical judgement to problems demonstrates clear, logical thinking/analytical approach. Knowledge and application of up-to-date evidence based practice
Desirable: - ILS, ALS or ATLS

- Eligible for full registration with the GMC at time of appointment and hold a current licence to practice.
- Minimum of 2 years of postgraduate medical experience (equivalent to that obtained in a UK Foundation Training programme) Either
- Evidence of current employment in a UKFPO affiliated Foundation Programme OR o 12 months experience after full GMC registration and evidence of achievement of Foundation competences in the 3 years before the intended start date from a UKFPO affiliated Foundation Programme or equivalent in line with GMC standards/Good Medical practice including

- Protect and promote the health of patients and of the public
- Provide a good standard of practice and care.
- Treat patients as individuals and respect their dignity
